The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) is a national sample survey designed to provide information on population, family planning, maternal and child health, child survival, HIV/AIDS, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), reproductive health, and nutrition in India. NFHS-5 will involve interviewing randomly selected women age 15-49 years and a sub-sample of men aged between 15-54 years.  The IIHMR, Jaipur is the field agency to organize the survey in Tripura on behalf of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, GoI.

The NFHS survey has had two specific objectives a) to provide essential data on health and family welfare needed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and other agencies for policy and program purposes, and b) to provide information on important emerging health and family welfare issues. To meet the objectives, provide estimates of the levels of fertility, infant and child mortality, and other health and family welfare indicators by background characteristics at the national and state levels; and measure trends in health and family welfare indicators overtime at the national and state levels.
