Agency : Inventory Control; Inventory of Linen; Hospital Inventory Levels

Objective : Broad objective: To control the circulating inventory of linen Specific objectives: • To calculate par level requirement of bed linen for IPD • To calculate the amount of missing linen in the last six months • To identify the causes of linen loss • To identify the opportunities for improvement

Background : • The study “Controlling the Inventory levels of Linen in Cloudnine Hospital, Bangalore” has been done to control the levels of circulating inventory to avoid surplus or shortage. • The hospital was facing an issue of shortage of linen because of excessive linen loss and there was no appropriate system for distributing the linen, leading to reduction in the stock of circulating inventory. There was a need to set an appropriate system of distributing the linen. • To control the inventory levels focus was given on establishing a distribution system based on Par level requirement and reducing the linen loss.

Methodology : The circulating inventory levels can be controlled by various factors but in this study focus was given on two factors i.e. setting up a distribution system based on Par level requirement and reducing linen loss. For setting up a distribution system the par level requirement was calculated using the bed occupancy rate. The data to calculate bed occupancy rate was taken from Hospital MIS. In order to reduce linen loss: • Firstly the total linen loss for the last six months was calculated as the data on total linen missed in the last six months was unavailable. Inventory reports were cross checked to calculate the total linen loss. Second step was to identify the causes of linen loss. • After calculating the par level requirement and identifying the causes of linen loss. Various improvement opportunities were identified and few possible solutions were implemented.

Findings : After setting up a distribution system based on Par level requirement and implementing the solutions to reduce linen loss, hospital was able to control the problem of surplus or shortage of linen in the department.

Availability of linen in all departments is essential for smooth flow of hospital operations. The study was focused on controlling inventory levels of linen in order to maintain continuous supply of linen.
