Objective : To assess the performance of Anganwadi Workers regarding services to be provided by them under the Integrated Child Development Scheme in Surat district.

Background : Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) was launched on 2nd October 1975, represents one of the world’s largest and most unique flagship programs for Early Childhood Development. The services include supplementary food, preschool education, and primary healthcare to children under 6 years of age and their mothers. It has focus on child and therefore, they take care of mothers during pregnancy and lactation. The Gujarat State’s commitment to its children towards holistic approach for child health, nutrition and development made this study to understand how Anganwadi workers provide these services.

Methodology : Three Anganwadi centers were selected from three different blocks. Performance of each of the AWW from identified AWCs was assessed as per the tables. Performance of various anganwadi workers and various activities were analysed in excel and graded. The study was conducted during March-April 2015.

Findings : First and second evaluator were assessing performance on basis of percentage registration of beneficiaries in AWC and for the services, third evaluator was frequency of providing services by AWW, next was working minutes of AWW (both were assessed according to the norms) . Last performance evaluator was maintenance of records. AWW are assessed per various performance evaluators, per evaluators explained above, provides result for AWW giving those services and accordingly they are graded for their level of performance.
