Objective : • To study existing sterilization techniques of the CSSD in a tertiary care hospital. • To analyse the efficiency of sterilization equipments of CSSD in the hospital.

Background : Sterilization is the process by which the probability of occurrence of the viable microorganisms in a medical product is reduced to 106 Sterilization as the infection control technique forms the most essential and important practice in the control of disease transmission and propagations. It needs constant monitoring. It is the process by which a surface, article or medium is freed of microorganisms either in vegetative or spore state. According to Guidelines for Disinfection and Sterilization in Healthcare Facilities, 2008; most medical and surgical devices used in healthcare facilities are made of materials that are heat stable and therefore undergo heat, primarily steam, sterilization. Despite advances in the medical field hospital acquired infection remains the most serious concern for a hospital that negates some of its good work. It is an acknowledged fact that even in advanced countries 5% of all hospital patients develop infection after being admitted to the hospital. Therefore, no hospital can overlook the importance of obtaining sterile supplies through efficient and safe sterilizing procedures. To combat this problem the hospital, need effective methods of sterilization failing which there will be contamination of critical instrumentation, infection of patient and potential loss of life and funds.

Methodology : An observational study was conducted in the central sterile supplies department of Manipal hospital, Jaipur from 6 Feb 2017 – 6 May 2017. The sterilization techniques were noted, and direct informal interviews were carried out with the department in charge and the staff. Data was collected from the records and checklists of the department.

Findings : The study revealed that Steam sterilization at a temperature of 1210C- 1240C with a holding time of 15-20 minutes and ethylene oxide is being practiced in the CSSD. Chemical, biological and mechanical indicators are regularly used for sterilization. The chemical indicators being used are Adhesive sterilization tape, Multivariable indicator, and steam sterilization integrator. The biological indicator being used is Bacillus Stearothermophilus. The mechanical indicators being referred to are Time, Temperature, and Pressure and Humidity charts. The packing material used to wrap items for sterilization is linen. The Utilization Coefficient of the two autoclaves was found to be 60%

Recommendations : The steam sterilization carried out in central sterile supplies department is adequate and efficient. The utilization coefficient was found to be 60% which indicates utilization is sufficient.
