Agency : Surgical Safety Checklist; Burn and Plastic Surgery; Operation Theatre; Safety of Patient

Objective : 1. To study the surgical process, flow the patients inside the operation theatre. 2. To search the areas of problem and find the reasons for the same. 3. To give recommendations for further improvement in the surgical safety of patients.

Background : Surgical service is one of the fundamental health care services given in the healthcare system. Surgical complications are a major cause of morbidity and mortality and also pose a major financial burden to patients and providers. It has been estimated that at least half of the complications that occur are avoidable. As part of its efforts to improve patient safety, the World Health Organization launched Safe Surgery Saves Lives program in 2008. The development of checklists is used in operating rooms, their use (compliance with all the three-time frame) has become greater than ever and associated with a significant reduction in postoperative complications and mortality. WHO surgical safety checklist is used worldwide in operation theatres for the safety of patients. The checklist can be used to check compliance of operation theatre and data collection. The data collected can be further analyzed to know the compliance of operation theatre and make any improvement if necessary.

Methodology : The researcher proposes for observational study design. Looking towards the time and cost, it is proposed to have a convenient sampling for this research. The study will be conducted in Delhi from February to April 2018. It is proposed to collect information of100 surgery patients of Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Delhi. WHO surgical safety checklist will be used for data collection. Data analysis will be done using MS Excel. Ethical Consideration: An informed consent will be taken from the respondents before any data collection with the organization.

Findings : Expected Outcome: The study is aimed at finding out problem area associated with the process followed in operation theatre at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Delhi. As the number of surgery will be high as it is the largest Hospital of Govt of NCT of Delhi in the Trans-Yamuna Area (East Delhi). The need of the hour will be to understand and improve the process flow as well as to form strategies to eliminate the issues. The cause and their effect will be identified, and recommendation will be made for value addition to assist in improving the quality of the service.

Recommendations :Operational Definition: Process flow provides a visual representation of the steps in a process, also referred to as Process Mapping or Flow Diagrams (Moresteam). Surgical safety is a tool for relevant clinical teams to improve the safety of surgery by reducing deaths and complications. The checklist is a list of items required, things to be done, or points to be considered, used as a reminder
