IIHMR successfully created and established a new discipline of Health Management by integrating concepts and principles of public health, management, demography, economics, leadership, social and behavioral sciences to develop new human resources to lead and effectively manage hospitals and health systems; to promote research in policy, strategies, program management and evaluation; and build and develop leadership and strategic management capacity of public health professionals, policy makers and program managers at all levels within India and in SAARC and South East Asia Region.

Why Public Health?

The challenges of public health faced by the society are constantly changing and, consequently, the field of public health needs to be dynamic enough to evolve with those changes and meet new challenges as they arise. The past few months have seen a dramatic increase in the pace of change in public health. The world is increasingly interconnected, and the lines between local and global concerns have become fundamentally blurred.

India is seeing unprecedented growth in the healthcare sector, which is rearranging itself to meet the needs of the market: newer delivery models are emerging, entrepreneurship is booming, FDI and VC investments are flowing. One of the biggest changes in the sector is the professionalization of healthcare delivery as a holistic discipline. While clinicians continue to be responsible for clinical outcomes, they along with the administrators are taking management decisions. Hence, there is a greater need for clinicians to know and understand business, and for administrators to understand the perspectives of both patient and provider. To bridge the gap between clinical and business worlds and build leaders in the healthcare industry, there is a dire need for a structured program of learning.
